Shakira Gets Political

PHOENIX - APRIL 29: Colombian pop star Shakira stands with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon in front of Arizona's state capitol building while speaking in protest of Arizona's new immigration law on April 29, 2010 in Phoenix, Arizona. A week earlier the state government passed what has been called the nation's toughest immigration law, raising fears that Hispanics may be racially profiled by police. Voicing her opinion on the recent illegal immigrant law in Arizona, Shakira was spotted in Phoenix to attend a protest.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” songstress met with youth at a community center, and also got together with Phoenix mayor Phil Gorden to discuss the new legislation.

Shakira said she’s afraid that the new law, requiring immigrants to prove their citizenship if stopped by police, is unfair and potentially racist.

“In my opinion it dulls human and civil rights of citizens and non-citizens. I am here as a Latina that believes in opportunity for all. We are concerned about the implementation of the law and the consequences it can have on the working families.”
